5. Is Jesus God?
“Jesus said to them ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM’” (John 8:58) This is Jesus’ most direct claim to be God. He claimed to be the “I AM”, the self existing one, the name that God gave for Himself to Moses on Mount Sinai some 1500 years before Christ’s time on earth. “God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM’” (Exodus 3:14)
The Gospel of John also makes a clear reference to the deity of Jesus, calling Him the Word of God, and acknowledging Him as:
1) being God
2) being the Creator- something only God can be
3) that He became a Man.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1) “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” (John 1:3) “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory.” (John 1:14)
The Scriptures also refer to the blood of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross as being the blood of God Himself. “…the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.” (Acts 20:28) Jesus also claimed to be one with God the Father. “I and My Father are one.” (John 10:30)
Jesus also claimed equality with God. “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God.” (Philippians 2:5-6) Who can be equal with God except God Himself? Jesus therefore must be divine. He is the second divine Person of the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
