1. What is Repentance?
Repentance simply means ‘to turn around’.
It is a change of heart concerning your spiritual condition and your standing before God. One needs to realize that we are sinners, born with a sin nature that we cannot overcome on our own; estranged from the presence of a holy God. The Scriptures condemn all to be under sin, for which cause Jesus said, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” (Luke 5:32) We must take side with God against ourselves and view our sin the way He sees it. Repentance is a key factor that cannot be overlooked in obtaining salvation, as you can see in many of the following scriptures.
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 3:2)
“Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.” (Acts 3:19)
“He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.” (Proverbs 28:13)
“Unless you repent you will all likewise perish.” (Luke 13:3)
“For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted.” (2 Corinthians 7:10)
“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:38)
So while repentance is necessary for salvation, it is not enough. Which brings us to Faith.
